Facebook is a platform that includes many social services, and its prevalence is increasing day by day. We can say that it is in demand after certain career organizations, especially in job searches. So how can we use Facebook in the job search process?

How does it work? How do we reach?

On a particular company’s Facebook page under the Jobs tab, according to certain criteria in Facebook’s jobs board section; job postings appear according to the criteria determined according to location, job concept, and category types.

Another fairly common option these days is Facebook groups. Groups are organized for certain countries, and for certain cities, to show that certain languages are present in the group. Thanks to job postings and job searches published in the group, people communicate with each other and the process is carried out. 

Maybe you come across a job posting that may be more difficult to reach than you expected, and once you see, you are doing the job you are looking for.

What are the advantages?

-You can apply for a job directly on Facebook, and you can contact directly within the shared job postings. Thus, this process is carried out faster and easier.

-You do not have to repeat your education and work history with each new job application. Recruiters can access your profile information if you allow them.

-Since employers can review your profile and see what you post on your Facebook page, it’s in your best interest to avoid things that might make you look negative. Both you and your Facebook profile representing you must be suitable for the job posting to be applied for.

What can you do?

Appropriate and well-written posts, the scope of the shared content, specifying the talents and skills possessed, and specifying the scopes suitable for the industry will create a preferable profile for employers.

What you can do on your Facebook page before applying?

1. Your profile picture is the first impression

Your profile picture is one of the first things a prospective employer will see after you apply for a Facebook job posting. That’s why it’s a good idea to avoid any photos that might fall into the inappropriate category. Do not forget that the first impression that will be formed about you is hidden in your photo.

2. Basics

Be sure to check that your basic knowledge is sufficient. Since your CV cannot be added to the Facebook page; Make sure your contact information and address are up to date. It is useful to include your date of birth, skills and experiences. Please indicate your phone number and your active e-mail address so that you can be reached.

3. Cover letter

Since you cannot add your CV to your job application, you can prepare a short cover letter. You briefly mention yourself in the text box; education, experience, and a letter that may be compatible with the job you are applying for will be effective for your employer. It will be the right way for you to proceed in a style similar to the motivation article. Your thoughts on why you think you are suitable for this job and why they should hire you will become a criterion in influencing your employer.

-Be sure to follow the pages of the job postings you are interested in, and do not disrupt the interaction. Know what the company is interested in, what its current status is, and how it is. Let them know that you know them and that you are following them.

Standing out on your CV is now one of the criteria in the job searching. The content should be easily read not only by the recruiter, but also it has to be easily read by the applicant tracking system (ATS).

1) Keep it short
First of all, it is about writing the CV in brief and in general it must be written in only two pages of A4, unless you have more experience (this only applies if you have +5 years of experience). 

2) Use plain sheet
You have to use plain sheet color paper, which will look professional and may be conveniently read. 

3) Choose the right font
You have to consider the font type and size. The ideal ones are the Arial, Times New Roman, or Calibri and the font must be readable and consistent in the whole CV, normally the font size is between 10-12.

4) Don’t forget keywords
Keywords should be applied on your CV, especially related to the job you would like to apply. Not only that but it also can easily be recognized by ATS, whose function is to track and analyze the most relevant CVs and be in the shortlist for the next step, which is the human review. Then, those words should also be in the active voice instead of passive voice. The last one is to write everything honestly, never exaggerate or lie on your achievements and experiences.

Some information you need to know:

Different countries may apply various CV requirements. In Europe, the CV might be different from the one in Asia and America. For example, in Europe, most companies would like to accept the colorful CV, unless in Asia and America, they require the ATS-standard level of CV, which is the one-color CV or even just white. Moreover, if you apply to more than one type of job, you must have your personalized CV too. The reason is because one job will have different skills requirements than the others, in particular, a customer service job will require more communication skills. On the other hand, an engineering job will require you to be able to do math and physics. Hence, to keep in mind, prepare several CVs that can fit the jobs you would like to apply for. So, whenever you are going to send your application, you already have your CV in your hand.

One of the basic ATS-standard CVs you can actually see is the Harvard University version. It is very simple yet clear because you just write your information in detail with their templates. You can actually use a free platform to make your CV. There are several applications that you can use to make your CV. One of them is Canva, which not only you can make your CV creatively with a lot of features, from the templates to the fonts and colors but you can also make Instagram posts, reels, etc.

Big companies, especially when they have a lot of people applying to their job vacancies, they use the technology to filter and make the recruitment process faster. Therefore, in my opinion, the ATS-friendly CV is better to be sent to them. Moreover, there are several criteria to make your CV stand out, which is about the languages. Usually, when you apply for jobs in the US or even European countries, it is beneficial for the candidates to be able to speak more than their native languages. So, for example, there is someone who would like to apply for a job in Italy. Not only does he need to be able to speak English but also the native language in that country. It is useful for him too to have good communication in between colleagues in the office, especially during lunch breaks or have a night out together. Even though you can still speak English, maybe it will show more comfort and support using their native language. On the other hand, in several conditions, such as when there are clients that you need to have consultation with, it will be easier for you to make them understand by explaining them in their languages.

What is written inside the CV should be quite in detail due to the information that will be gotten on the selection process. The first crucial one is about your basic information, such as name, address, telephone number, email. These may make the recruiters easier to reach you when they need you.

The second one is about your educational background, when you are now searching for work, it is better for you to write starting from your university education. For example, if you have your master degree already, you can write both your bachelor and master degrees. Moreover, specify it in detail and also your GPA if possible. The third one is about your experiences, it may be in a form of work, internship, or even voluntary jobs. During writing those experiences, you might have to write in your job descriptions, especially the ones that are related to the job vacancy you will apply for. Highlight the skills and tools that may be useful for the recruiters to review if you suit the position. The fourth one is about your organizational experiences, for example you join student organizations or even national and international organizations, in particular, you join model united nations, or other related organizations. It might have additional value to your CV.

Conclusion

No matter how colorful your CV looks or just white plain paper, the best CV may also depend on what you experience and the relation between your CV and the job vacancies that you apply to. Furthermore, do not forget to make your CV personalized when applying to different companies and make sure your skills are actually what they are searching for.

Use the headline to sell yourself.

The headline is the most important part of your LinkedIn profile. It’s what people will see when they search for you, so it needs to be catchy and compelling.

• Don’t just list your job title, but also mention your skills and experience in the headline as well. You can also use this space to write about what makes you different from other people in your field (for example: “I’m an innovative thinker.”) This will help make sure that people know who they’re hiring before they even apply for the job!
• Don’t just say “I’m a great person” or “I’m a good worker.” Instead, try something like “I love working on challenging projects”

Turn your summary into your story.

Your summary is a short, clear statement of your experience and skills. Use it to sell yourself in a way that helps you stand out from the crowd.

• Use the headline: The most important thing about your summary is that it should be punchy, short and focused on what you can do for clients or employers. The headline should tell them why they should hire you over other candidates (or at least get them excited enough to click through). You don’t need to use any fancy language here—just be clear!
• Be specific: Don’t just list off vague qualifications like “I have experience with XYZ company.” Instead, focus on specific examples of work done by others who have hired similar people with similar qualifications. For example: “I worked as program manager for an organization that was looking into improving their customer service process” will give potential employers more detail than just saying “I’ve worked in customer service before.”

Grow your network.

LinkedIn is a great tool for growing your network. It’s one of the best ways to meet new people, and it can also help you connect with people you already know. If you’re looking for introductions, this guide will help you find the right people in your network and get them more involved in helping grow yours!

Always list your skills.

The first step to getting the most out of LinkedIn is listing your skills. If you’re not doing this, then I don’t know what will happen!

• Write a description for each skill that’s easy for others to find. For example: “I am an expert in SEO.”
• Use keywords that people will search for when looking for a job (this is especially important if you think they’ll be searching). You can use these same keywords in any other social media accounts as well so that people can see all of your work at once!

Get recommendations if possible.

If you can, ask your colleagues and friends to recommend you. LinkedIn has a feature called “Recommendations” that shows the top five recommendations for each of your positions and industries. This makes it easy to find people who are familiar with what you do, which is great if they know someone else who might need the same skill set as well!

Take a skills assessment.

If you’re not sure what skills or experience is most important to employers, take a skills assessment. This will help identify your strengths and weaknesses so that you can build a profile on LinkedIn that highlights the ones that are most relevant to employers.

Start your day with a positive mindset
Mornings set the tone for the rest of the day. Practice yoga, spend 10 minutes meditating, make your bed while listening to songs that boost your mood, or try stretching exercises.

Consume a healthy diet
Food is fuel for your body! Food helps you build strength, it gives you energy and allows all your body systems to work. So, make healthy choices.

Take time for things you love
Always make sure to do things you love! We all have activities that we enjoy doing. Take the time on a regular basis for these things.

1. Be precise and concise

The manager needs to understand the basic things about you, such as:
– Who you are
– What is your professional background
– What are your skills and abilities
– What you have achieved
Present only your main tasks, experiences, and skills that are relevant to the position.
Use bullet points to list your skills and tasks by groups, it will look clearer.

2. Use only relatable information

The managers usually are looking for your professional background, and not your personal life. The only personal details you can add are the date of birth and the country of residence.
Details such as marital status (married/single, etc) and sex should be excluded.

For the education part, do not include all the diplomas and certificates you achieved, only the most recent ones (ex: you completed your BA- include the bachelor's degree only, avoid diplomas from high school and middle school).

3. Irrelevant jobs you held

When the employer is analyzing your CV, he or she is looking for relevant information, again!
If you apply for a Marketing job, include in your CV all the experience related to marketing: previous jobs, courses, degrees, etc. Do not include summer jobs or seasonal jobs (ex: waiter), or even jobs you had like 10 years ago that are not relevant to the position you apply to!

4. Highlight your interests

It is also important to mention your hobbies and activities because this can create interest for your potential employer. However, include interests related to the job you are applying for!

Use examples that can be related both to your personal and professional life. But, the most important part here is, to be honest! Do not list “interested in photography” when you have no idea how to use a professional camera.

5. Start to use LinkedIn.

According to an HR Statistic, 87% of recruiters use LinkedIn to check candidates.
LinkedIn is a social platform where professionals can network, search for jobs, sign up as freelancers, and publish articles. It is a place for professionals to connect with past and current colleagues, increase business connections and networks within their industry, discuss business ideas, search for jobs, and look for new hires.

Working remotely is a good way on saving time and maximizing on productivity however it can also have its own challenges. Many times people get distracted with things that aren’t related to work, resulting to a lot of time wasted in the process. Loss of focus leads to decrease in productivity and you start procrastinating thinking that you will work later, which turns out to never hence affecting financial growth. Below are some useful tips on how to be productive when working from home;

1. Set your schedule

You need to set appropriate hours that will suit your needs. The hours don’t have to be from the usual 9-5 however they shouldn’t conflict with the requirements of your boss. Once you set a schedule, you need to stick to it to ensure maximum productivity.

2. Minimize distractions

Try as much as possible to avoid distractions such as social media. There are programs such as SelfControl which allow you to block yourself from certain websites for a set period of time. This program is available only to Mac users; for the Windows users, the Freedom program will serve the same purpose.

3. Create your workspace

Make sure you have a designated area in the house where it can serve as an office. Go to that spot every day for work purposes and this process will train your brain that that’s the area where work gets done. Also ensure that this space is secluded so that your friends, family, housemates or children do not distract you from your work.

4. Reach out to people

Working from home can get lonely but it doesn’t need to be. Reach out to other telecommuters and and get yourself human interaction. Have personal and professional relationships that are beneficial to you. Also reach out to your co-workers to see how they are doing, schedule virtual meetings to discuss your plans for the day or week.

5. Practice self-care

Make sure that you are taking care of yourself by getting enough sleep that compliments your set schedule. Do not work in your sweat pants, shower and get ready for work as you would normally do when commuting to work. Have healthy meals and eating patterns; lastly make sure you exercise to keep your blood flow smooth and brain active.

7 117 languages are spoken today. Out of these, roughly 40% of languages are now endangered with less than 1 000 speakers remaining.

But first of all, what do you mean by spoken? Only the number of native speakers or how many people speak them natively or non-natively? Also, what’s the border between a language and a dialect? So we decided that this article ranks languages by their number of native speakers.

The following languages are listed according to the 2019 edition of Ethnologue, a language reference published by SIL International.

1. Mandarin Chinese

Usually people speak of Chinese as if it was a single language. However, it’s actually a group of 13 languages of which Mandarin Chinese is the biggest one. It’s an official language in the People’s Republic of China, the Republic of China (Taiwan) and Singapore.

Mandarin is written using Chinese characters, a system where each character represents a different word. There are two main versions: “traditional” characters, used in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau and “simplified” characters, used in China, Singapore and Malaysia. It’s estimated that you need to learn 2 000 – 3 000 characters to read a newspaper. An educated Chinese person will know about 8 000!

English is the largest language in the world, if you count both native and non-native speakers. First due to the colonial influence of the British Empire and later to the spread of the American culture. However, if you only count native speakers, Mandarin Chinese is the largest one. It is concentrated in just a few countries whereas English has more non-native speakers so it can be found in way more countries, mainly in Africa. English is spoken in 146 countries while Mandarin Chinese is spoken in 29.

2. Spanish

The language now known as “Spanish” emerged in the Castile region of Spain. That’s why it’s sometimes referred to as “Castilian”. Ever since, Spanish explorers have spread their language worldwide. It’s now spoken in Central and South America and the Caribbean, with speakers also in Southeast Asia and even Africa.

Speakers: 480 million

Percentage of the world population: 5,99%

Language family: Indo-European

3. English

English is established as the world’s lingua franca. The name “English” comes from the “Angles”, Germanic people who settled in Britain in the first millennium A.D.. Its vocabulary and sentence structure are closest to modern languages like German and Dutch. Nevertheless, it’s been heavily influenced by other languages like Latin, introduced by the French-speaking Normans who conquered Britain in the 11th century A.D.

Percentage of the world population: 4,92%

4. Hindi

Hindi is India’s official first language. However, significant Hindi speech communities are also found in South Africa, Mauritius, Bangladesh, Yemen and Uganda.

Hindi is closely related to Urdu, the main language of Pakistan, which is written with the Arabic script.

Hindi first started to be used in writing during the 4th century A.D.. It was originally written with the Brahmi script but since the 11th century A.D. it has been written with the Devanāgarī alphabet.

Speakers: 341 million

Percentage of the world population: 4,43%

5. Bengali

Bengali is the official language of Bangladesh and of several Indian states. It’s written in the Bengali alphabet, sometimes known as Eastern Nagari or Bengali-Assamese script. It’s related to Tibetan script.

Bengali script is relatively unknown in the West but it’s actually the fifth most widely-used writing system in the world. More people worldwide write in Bengali script than in Cyrillic.

Speakers: 228 million

Percentage of the world population: 2,96%

6. Portuguese

Portuguese developed from Latin and is closely related to modern Spanish. The name comes from Portugal, whose name comes from Porto, the country’s second-largest city.

Someone who speaks Portuguese is called a Lusophone. This word comes from “Lusitania”, the Roman name for the area in which Portugal is now located.

The Portuguese empire use to be big, from South America to Africa to India and Southeast Asia. Today, Portuguese is an official language in nine countries, as well as in Macau.

7. Russian

The largest of the Slavic languages, Russian is the official language of four countries (Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan). Furthermore, it’s also spoken in many other countries of the former Soviet Union.

Russian’s closest relatives include Ukrainian and Belarusian. More distantly, they’re related to other Slavic languages like Polish, Czech, Slovak, Bulgarian and Serbo-Croat.

Like many of the Slavic languages, it’s written with the Cyrillic alphabet.

8. Japanese

The roots of the Japanese language remain unclear. Some link it to the Altaic language family, which includes Turkish and Mongolian, for example, but it also shows similarities to Austronesian languages like Polynesian.

The Japanese writing system consists of three different character sets: Kanji (several thousands of Chinese characters) and Hiragana and Katakana (two syllabaries of 46 characters each; together called Kana).

Korean is regularly compared to Japanese, as both languages share important key features such as general structure, vowel harmony, lack of conjunctions and the extensive use of honorific speech. However, the pronunciation in Japanese is suggestively different from Korean.

Since the mid 18th century the Japanese have adopted a huge amount of foreign words mainly from English but also from Portuguese, Dutch and Spanish.

9. Western Punjabi

Although the majority of speakers of the Western Punjabi language live in Pakistan, there is also a significant group living in Afghanistan. The term “Punjabi” is used to describe both of those who speak Punjabi and those who inhabit the Punjab region of India and Pakistan.

Western Punjabi has no official status in Pakistan. Punjabi speakers in Pakistan use Urdu and English in government administration, media and education, as well as in most writing.

10. Marathi

Marathi is mainly spoken by people in the Indian state of Maharashtra and neighbouring states but also in Israel and Mauritius. Marathi is thought to be a descendent of Maharashtri, one of the Prakrit languages which developed from Sanskrit.

Marathi first appeared in writing during the 11th century in the form of inscriptions on stones and copper plates. From the 13th century until the mid 20th century, it was written with the Modi alphabet. Since 1950 it has been written using the Devanāgarī alphabet.

The resume is your green card towards the job interview that you were dreaming of. Thus, you should build it carefully and with consciousness. Listing your professional experience and education is obvious but what about hobbies in a resume? Is it ok or should you avoid most of the time?

Well, there are, as always, several opinions. Some say that mentioning hobbies in a resume is a waste of time. They say that hiring managers do not really care about your free time activities because they need you to work.

Hobbies in a resume can tell a bunch of things about your personality. Let it shine through the whole serious layer (while staying professional, of course). Mentioning hobbies can really help you to stand out from the crowd! And sometimes (though really not that often) it might even help you to find something in common with the hiring manager or the possible employer.

<the WHEN?>

You should always only talk about your hobbies when it is relevant. It depends on the situation, but please consider the fact that your hobbies have to be somehow related to the field you are applying for. At least this should show what skills you are able to develop through one activity or another. Not a single thing has to be random on you resume!

<the HOW?>

While keeping it relevant to the job position, remember not to talk too much. Please mention no more that 4 hobbies (or field of interest). Otherwise, it might look exaggerated. Plus, keeping things short demonstrates your ability to prioritize and put things in order (which is always nice)!
